How it works

How the Dog Chocolate Toxicity Calculator works

Methodology

Estimated methylxanthine dose = grams eaten × approximate methylxanthine concentration ÷ body weight in kg. Concentrations vary by product. Common veterinary references describe mild signs around 20 mg/kg, cardiac effects around 40–50 mg/kg and seizures around 60 mg/kg or more.

Frequently asked questions

What if I do not know the chocolate type or amount?+

Treat uncertainty seriously and call a veterinarian or poison service. A calculator cannot safely fill in missing exposure details.

Should I make my dog vomit?+

Only if a veterinarian or poison professional specifically tells you to and explains how.

Important veterinary note

Calculator outputs are estimates for education and planning. They do not diagnose disease, replace a physical examination, or override advice from a veterinarian who knows your dog.
