When a calculator is useful
Calculators are good at arithmetic, date counting and organizing known inputs. They are less useful when the key question is diagnosis, pain, breathing, neurological signs, severe vomiting or an unknown toxic exposure.
Emergency red flags
Seek urgent veterinary help for collapse, repeated seizures, severe breathing difficulty, major trauma, rapidly worsening abdominal swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, inability to urinate, profound weakness or a suspected dangerous poisoning.
Weight and nutrition
Track body condition as well as scale weight. Use calorie estimates as starting points, then adjust from real trends. Complete commercial diets appropriate for life stage are generally easier to balance than improvised recipes.
Puppies
Growth rate, vaccination and exercise plans change quickly in the first year. Regular veterinary visits are important for preventive care, parasite control and developmental questions.
